Things to Do & Places to Eat in Wichita Kansas

Since we’ve now lived a few different places around the country (and visited many more!), I thought I might share some of our favorite things to do from each place.

Wichita, Kansas is where we spent the majority of our lives & we know it like the back of our hands. Here are just a few of our favorite things to do and places to eat in Wichita!

Things To Do

Botanica
Botanica upped its game big time a few years ago when they added the Children's Garden. Botanica is beautiful to walk around anyway, but if you have kids, the children's garden is such a great space. There are fountains, a large tree house play area, a little play kitchen, and lots of little garden spaces to run around.

Sedgwick County Zoo
Wichita really has a great zoo! You never know what to expect at a zoo with a mid size city, but we really love this one. We went frequently and just did about half of the zoo each time because it is large.

Warren Theatres
Yes, a movie theatre. They’re not all the same. The Warren is one of the nicest theatres in that area of the country. If you go to the West Warren, try to do an IMAX. If you go Oldtown Warren (Downtown), they deliver food & drinks to your seats- ***Make sure and check the website because minors are not allowed at night time shows at this theatres** and east is the, well, the prettiest of them all.

Keeper of the Plains
The Keeper is a large Native American statue on the Arkansas River that runs through downtown Wichita. The walk around the river and the bridge to the Keeper are fun to look at and at certain times (see below), the “Ring of Fire” is turned on in the evening.

(Here is the copied & pasted Ring of Fire times from the Visit Wichita website: RING OF FIRE HOURS: The Keeper of the Plains “Ring of Fire” will burn the following schedule during the months of Daylight Savings Time (spring and summer: Nightly: 9 PM for 15 minutes. During standard time (fall and winter): 7 PM for 15 minutes. For added public safety, the Ring of Fire is manually turned on. All schedules are weather depending, including river levels. The Ring of Fire will not be turned on in high winds, rain or other inclement weather. If the river is too high, or if a person is too close, they will not be turned on.)

Eats & Drinks

River City Brewing Company
This was our ‘spot’ with some of our friends on Wednesday evenings. Wed night is half price pizza night and our staple is the Buffalo Chicken Pizza. Mr Manlove likes to sample the brews, of course. Sometimes there is live music- Check their Facebook Page.

Public At The Brickyard
Located in the heart of Old Town, Public is the King of sourcing locally grown ingredients to craft really great eats. I love the Prairie Sliders and Papa Bears Brisket Tacos. Also their Public Smash cocktail is a favorite.

Bella Luna
This is my favorite lunch spot. I order a big plate of hummus for an appetizer and I have a long standing relationship with the Mediterranean Garlic Chicken Pizza which is technically also an appetizer, but I like the things that I like. Their pastas and wraps also get honorable mention. There are several Bella Luna locations around town.

Flying Stove
Our favorite of many Wichita food trucks. Their menu changes and we always have trouble deciding between the delicious options. Truffle fries are usually an offered side and cannot be missed. And may I take a moment to express my undying love of food trucks. I daydream about owning one- then remember that I'm usually not even allowed to touch kitchen things :/

Reverie Coffee Roasters
This is, in my opinion, the best coffee in Wichita (and picture Will Ferrel in an elf costume screaming about the best cup of coffee, thank you). Located just west of historic neighborhood College Hill and just east of downtown, this coffee shop is in a cozy spot. I’ve enjoyed many an espresso and conversation there (Hey Lisa, my reverie-loving friend!).

A few other quick faves & links: Tanya’s Soup Kitchen, Doo Dah Diner (Their breakfast is my favorite), Mead’s Corner Coffee Shop, and Oeno Wine Bar.

Seasonal Activities

Riverfest
Riverfest is a HUGE festival in Wichita in late May/early June. There are parades, concerts, TONS of food options, and fireworks on the river. And the best people watching you may ever see in the mid-west.

Intrust Bank Arena
The Arena has tons of great events all year, but depending on when you are visiting, you may want to check out what concerts or shows will be going on.

Final Friday
The last Friday of each month most all of the museums and galleries in Old Town open up for free to walk through. Lots of times there will be food samples and entertainment going on as well. My favorite is Prairie Vistas Photography by John Morrison.

Rock River Rapids This water park can be enjoyed in the summer months and is located in Derby, KS. It is a fun way to fill a hot Kansas summer day!
